You can listen to the interview that is full pressing here.
We covered a complete lot of subjects sets from why I believe they need to leave the vocabulary in the SAT as is, to whether I believe that test prep works. Among the many topics we talked about were:
We also talked about my book that is upcoming Perfect get Project: Uncovering the Secrets of the SAT and what it’s all about.
Therefore how much does the SAT Count in the Admissions Decision?
SAT counts for lots more than colleges will admit to much less than students think.
The Academic Index the AI Calculator should shed light on ‘how much’ the SAT counts. Although AI originated for athletes, they calculate it for many students.
Don’t miss these Kitchen Table Math reviews, which add more insight, including one commenter whom found a (somewhat old) College Board report that gives a wide range of details on the decision techniques used by many universities.
[snip]The first component is based in your SAT scores, the second component is according to your SAT II scores, additionally the third component is based on your GPA. The link above talks about a GPA dining table provided to the eight universities, but it does not explain how a GPA is calculated. It generally seems to use a scale that is weighted the most notable score is 4.3. I have not found out how this number is calculated. The spreadsheet then proceeds to select the higher rating related to each of the two GPA figures. It’s constantly struck me that the SAT scores make up two-thirds of this index. Universities might come with a fudge element if they know one thing about a school that is high but no option for that shows up within the example spreadsheet.
Dear Ms. Stier:
I recently discovered your site and it is loved by me! Thanks for doing it.
I could actually use some advise on the best way to approach test that is SAT for my quadruplets. [me: OMG]
I’ve 3 girls and 1 boy. They took the PSAT in sophomore 12 months and they takes the PSAT once again this October.
One of the drawbacks of getting all my children the same age is that any mistakes I make affects all four. None of them benefit from me learning from my errors so I hope to get this as right when I can.
Do you believe I should have them study as a little team together under my guidance (from experience it’s like wanting to herd cats); get a tutor for the four of those in a small group; have someone tutor them individually; or deliver them to a SAT test prep center? Or a mixture of all of these? I must watch my costs too.
How do I find a tutor that is good? What is the most readily useful test prep business?
If these are questions you can help me with I would personally appreciate it. If it really is not a thing that it is possible to assist me then that’s okay and I appreciate you taking your time and effort to read my e-mail.
Thanks again for the internet site info
Sincerely,
Multiple Mom
Dear Multiple Mom,
My gut says to do some work together with all four (e.g. lots of vocab, full practice tests, and they can explain answers to one another because that is clearly a great way to learn), and do a little preparation separately. If you can find an affordable tutor(s), that’s the best means.
Here are a few questions to ask a potential tutor (or test prep company):
1) can you customize your approach and, if so, just how?
2) exactly What’s your score that is average gain student? Many tutors will not respond to this question because there are incredibly many variables that it’s very nearly perhaps not fair to inquire of. That said, an excessive ‘average score gain’ should be described as a banner. e.g., 200 points in 30 days.
3) just how long do you advise students to plan the SAT and how much does it cost? The answer that is right be individual and will be based on where the student begins and what the goal is.
4) What test prep materials can you use? ( whether it’s not College that is official Board, be wary.)
5) How shmoop.pro much homework will there be between sessions? (A great tutor will have students do as much act as possible off the clock, such as vocab and practice tests.)
The step that is first to own all four kids take an official College Board practice SAT. You need to use one from the College Board’s Blue Book, or a practice is had by the College Board test on its website.
You’ll want to determine what they need to work on and whether they need foundational work or more traditional test prep polish. My guess is they need foundational work, as most kids do (and as we did!). Be sure you choose a test or tutor prep company who are able to assess that well!
Regarding test prep companies, we’d steer clear of anyone whom does not primarily use College Board material (that would include most/if not all large, brand-name test prep companies).
